Fractional Head of AI · UK & Ireland

Your fractional AI lead.
Useful AI, put to work.

Your team is trying AI. Suppliers are pitching more tools. Bring in a named fractional AI lead to choose the work worth doing, make the decisions and help your team put it into everyday use.

Priced on scopeOne agreed monthly fee. Build work and software costs scoped separately.

The role, explained

What is a fractional Head of AI?

A fractional AI lead, also called a fractional Head of AI, takes responsibility for your AI work for an agreed part of the month. They connect business priorities to practical use cases, guide tool and supplier decisions and work with your team to keep delivery and adoption moving. Chief AI Officer (CAIO) is another title, usually used for a wider executive remit.

This suits a business with AI opportunities or scattered experiments that need a clear owner. Your lead can work alongside your CIO, CTO, security lead, operations team and existing suppliers. We agree the decisions they own and what needs your approval, with a defined scope and monthly fee.

When it makes sense

Recognise the situation?

01

Experiments are multiplying

Different teams have bought tools or built small automations, but nobody has a clear view of the overall cost, information being used or overlap. Your AI lead establishes the priorities and a practical way to make decisions.

02

A pilot has nowhere to go

The demonstration worked, but the team has no agreed process for reviewing outputs, handling exceptions or supporting the system. Leadership closes the gap between a promising prototype and a workflow people can rely on.

03

The business needs a sensible first step

You can see opportunities but do not want to commission a large programme on a guess. Start with one real workflow, understand the baseline and decide whether AI is the right tool before committing to a build.

Responsibility, made concrete

What your leader takes on.

Choose against a business case

Describe the problem before selecting a model or platform. Look at how often the task happens, the effort involved, the quality needed and the cost of mistakes. Compare a change to the process, conventional automation and AI before deciding.

Set the delivery conditions

Agree the information a system can access, the actions it can take and the points where a person must review the result. Bring the relevant business, security and privacy owners into those decisions before the workflow goes live.

Make testing part of the work

Set acceptance criteria using realistic examples, including exceptions and poor inputs. Review whether the output is useful enough for the task. A successful demonstration is a starting point for testing, not proof that every case will work.

Support adoption and review results

Work with the people who will use the change. Agree a clear handover, ownership of exceptions and a review rhythm. Compare results with the baseline and decide whether to improve, expand or stop.

The first priorities

Start with the work
in front of you.

We start with the work your people do, the tools you already pay for and any AI experiments under way. Together we choose the first priorities, check the information and access needed, and agree who will deliver each change. You get a short, usable plan with named owners and measures of progress.

Your AI lead then works with the team to move those priorities forward: make decisions, resolve blockers, review testing and help people use the result. The scope determines the time commitment. Engineering and integrations are agreed separately, whether delivered by AssurePath, your developers or another supplier.

Costs and commitment

Priced on scope

Fractional AI Lead and Head of AI engagements are priced on scope. We agree your named leader, responsibilities, time commitment and monthly fee before you sign. Engineering, software subscriptions and ongoing support are identified separately so you can see the cost of leadership and the cost of delivery.

If one scoped build is all you need, we will say so. You should not need to buy an ongoing leadership role to get a clear piece of work delivered. Equally, a build quote should not hide the continuing ownership and review that a live workflow needs.

Leadership and delivery

We build and run AI ourselves.

Ellis, our AI receptionist, is one example you can explore. The point is practical experience of a system in use: the questions it handles, the information it captures and the handover it needs. That informs how we approach client work without promising that every business needs the same solution.

Questions before the call

Know what you’re
bringing in.

Are Fractional AI Lead, Head of AI and Chief AI Officer the same?

The titles overlap. AI Lead and Head of AI both describe the person leading the work; Chief AI Officer (CAIO) usually signals a wider executive remit. We agree the authority, responsibilities and time commitment your business needs rather than treating the title as a fixed package.

Do we need an AI consultant or a fractional AI lead?

If you need a defined assessment, training session or build, a scoped consultancy project may be enough. A fractional AI lead is useful when you need someone to keep making decisions, coordinate delivery and take responsibility for adoption over time. We use the scoping call to work out which arrangement fits.

Can you work with our existing developers and suppliers?

Yes. Your leader can coordinate work with your own team and delivery partners. Where AssurePath engineering is useful, we agree it as a separate scope rather than making it a condition of the leadership engagement.

Do we need a custom AI system?

Not necessarily. Better use of existing tools or a simpler process may solve the problem. We assess the workflow, information and costs before recommending a build.

How do we know if the work is succeeding?

Agree the baseline and measures before delivery. Depending on the workflow, that might mean turnaround, time spent, rework, output quality or adoption. Review those measures alongside cost and exceptions, then decide what happens next.

How much does a fractional AI lead cost?

The monthly fee depends on the responsibilities and time you need. There is no fixed starting rate for this role. We agree the scope and fee before you sign, with any engineering, software subscriptions and ongoing support priced separately.
