Your IT manager is pulled in every direction
Support, renewals, projects and requests from the board all compete for the same person. A director helps set priorities, gives the manager senior backing and makes the trade-offs explicit.
Fractional IT Director · UK & Ireland
Your IT manager can be good at the job and still need senior backing. Bring in a director to make the difficult decisions, manage suppliers and turn a growing workload into a workable plan.
The role, explained
A fractional IT Director leads your IT function on a part-time basis. They take responsibility for operational priorities, supplier performance, budget decisions and communication with the leadership team. It is a way to get experienced management above the helpdesk without immediately appointing a full-time director.
This often fits a business with a small internal IT team or an outsourced support provider, especially where the MD or finance director has become the default escalation point. The support is there; what is missing is someone with the remit to decide what happens next and hold the work to account.
When it makes sense
Support, renewals, projects and requests from the board all compete for the same person. A director helps set priorities, gives the manager senior backing and makes the trade-offs explicit.
A recurring problem crosses the boundaries between your MSP, software vendor and connectivity provider. Someone needs to agree responsibilities, challenge performance and follow the issue through to a resolution.
A major renewal, office move, system replacement or change of support provider needs a business view. You need someone who can compare the options and explain the cost, dependencies and risks before you commit.
Responsibility, made concrete
Agree who owns what across your team and providers. Set a manageable programme of operational improvements and review it regularly. Give your IT manager someone senior to discuss difficult decisions with.
Review service commitments, recurring issues and proposed changes. Challenge a renewal on what the business actually needs and keep track of decisions before contract dates turn into emergencies.
Bring support, licensing, equipment and planned work into a clear view. Explain what is necessary now, what can wait and what a proposed saving would change for the business.
Provide a practical management update on service performance, progress, blockers and decisions. Make it possible for the MD or finance director to understand the position without having to become the IT manager.
The first priorities
We start with the team, the support arrangements and the issues that keep landing on the leadership team’s desk. We review supplier responsibilities, important contracts and the current workload. From that, we agree the decisions your director will own and the first priorities for the function.
The next step is a working rhythm: how the director meets your team, when suppliers are reviewed and how the business hears about progress. Any wider project is scoped explicitly. You should be able to see what the director is responsible for and who is carrying out the implementation.
Choose the right help
| Role or service | Where it helps |
|---|---|
| IT Director | Leads the IT function, supports the team and holds suppliers to account. The focus is practical management and reliable delivery. |
| IT manager or MSP | Runs support and technical operations within the agreed responsibilities. A director provides senior direction and oversight alongside them. |
| CIO | Connects the wider technology estate and investment plan to business strategy. Useful when systems, operating model and transformation need board-level ownership. |
Costs and commitment
Fractional IT Director cover starts from £995 per month. That is a starting point rather than an all-inclusive package. The fee depends on the responsibilities and time the role needs, and we agree the monthly commitment with you before anything is signed.
Leadership does not automatically include a helpdesk, unlimited engineering or a major change project. Your existing providers can continue to deliver those services. Where you need extra AssurePath delivery or managed support, we agree the scope and price separately. The arrangement can also be bounded, for example to cover a gap while you recruit.
Leadership and delivery
You do not have to replace your team or move to a new MSP to bring in a director. The role is there to make the existing arrangement work better and identify where it genuinely needs to change. AssurePath can provide managed IT as a separate service if that is part of the requirement.

Usually the role gives your manager senior support and a clearer set of priorities. We agree the division of responsibility with you so it helps the team rather than creating another unclear layer of management.
No. Your director can work with your existing providers. If there is a reason to change one, they can assess the options and explain the recommendation before you decide.
That depends on the scope. We agree the time commitment, meetings and availability before you sign. The starting monthly price is not a promise of unlimited access or full-time coverage.
Yes, it can be a bounded engagement where that fits the requirement. Agree the gap, likely timeframe and handover responsibilities at the start, then review the scope if the situation changes.
